A temporary mitigation, released in Windows Updates between July 29, 2021, and July 12, 2022, was made available for organizations that encountered this issue and couldn’t bring devices into compliance as required for CVE-2021-33764. However, starting in July 2022, this temporary mitigation will not be usable in security updates. The Windows July 2022 preview update will remove the temporary mitigation and will require compliant printing and scanning devices.

As of July 19, 2022, there will be no further fallback option in later updates, and all non-compliant devices must be identified using the audit events starting in January 2022 and updated or replaced by the mitigation removal. After June 15, 2022, legacy IE-based sites and apps must be accessed through Internet Explorer Mode (IE Mode) in Microsoft Edge. If any of the following are true for your organization, you should follow the steps below to prepare as your organization may be affected by the coming changes:

• Any of your users use Internet Explorer.
• Any of your users’ devices do not have Microsoft Edge installed.
• Your organization uses legacy websites or applications that require IE.

Note: Windows 10 LTSC and Server are not impacted by this retirement.

What you need to do to prepare?

Prepare your organization for these changes by following the steps provided below. For additional information, refer to the Getting Started guide for Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer mode. To ready your organization for these changes, Microsoft Managed Desktop recommends you do the following:

Step 1: Install Microsoft Edge

• Use the Microsoft Edge setup guide to install Edge for your organization

Step 2: Set up IE Mode for Edge

• Check to see if your organization requires IE Mode & if required set it up, by following the steps in the Configure IE mode self-guided experience
• If using IE Mode, conduct testing to ensure your sites are functioning properly
  • Configure the Disable IE policy for a pilot group of devices
  • Verify that your sites dependent on IE Mode still work properly

Step 3: Set an internal retirement date and notify users of the upcoming change

Step 4: Disable IE to prevent retrogression on your internal retirement date

• Set your internal retirement date prior to June 15, 2022. For more information, refer to Don’t wait for June 15th! Set your own IE retirement date. – Microsoft Tech Community
• Configure Disable IE 11 policy to block the IE app on your internal retirement
